Mail that we send through Exchange is being delayed. Can anyone help us?

The message is as follows:

"This is an automatically generated Delivery Status Notification.

This is a warning message only
You do not need to resend your message.
Delivery to the following recipients has been delayed."

Thank you

How are you sending email? DNS or Smarthost?

If you are using DNS-> Can you resolve (use NSLOOKUP) the MX record for one
of the recipient domain? Can you connect to that server (use Telnet 25)?

If you are using a Smarthost-> Can you connect to your smarthost? Do they
require authentication?

Cheers,

Hi Javier,

Thanks for your prompt reply!
We are new at this: what by "smarthost" do you mean
We are using POP3/SMTP direct to our ISP from SBS. Use of DNS looks
complicated at this point, but eventually we will summon up courage.
Thanks, Robert

Hi Robert!

When I mentioned a smarthost I was refering to what you selected when you
ran CEICW. There is a screen that presented you with the following options:
a) Use DNS to Router e-mail or b) Forward all e-mail to e-mail server at
your ISP. Which one you selected?

More info about DNS vs. Smarthost:

Ok. Now try to relay something to your ISP manually. On the server open a
cmd prompt and type (be careful typing because there is not backspace in
telnet):

Telnet smarthost_address.of_your_ISP.com 25 [enter]
EHLO yourdomain.com [enter]
MAIL FROM: ***@yourdomain.com [enter]
RCPT TO: ***@insomeotherdomain.com [enter]
DATA [enter]
SUBJECT: TEST [enter][enter]
TEST MESSAGE [enter]
. [enter]
QUIT

Does this work? Did ***@insomeotherdomain.com got the test message?

Hi Javier,
I have tried to send a message via CMD by typing what you suggested.
Here is the result:
"Could not open connection to the host on port 25. Connection failed."
This is exactly what I typed: " Telnet smarthost_1und1.com 25 "

I also tried telnet smarthost_212.227.15.165 25
I am able to ping my ISP.

Sorry... the "smarthost_address.of_your_ISP.com" was supposed to be
substituted entirely for the hostname of IP. However, I don't think the
address that you posted is a smarthost (1und1.com nor 212.227.15.165)...
because I get no response.

[I do get a response for mail.1und1.com, but that doesn't mean that's the
smarthost it could be their mailserver]

but Javier, a smarthost IS nothing more than a mailserver.
That is correct... but that doesn't mean all mailservers are smarthosts. For
example, my own ISP has mailservers called gateway-r.comcast.net (the MX
records for comcast.net), but it is only for their domain. I cannot relay
thru that server... I must use smtp.comcast.net as a smarthost.

I'm not saying this is the case, but rather that just because it answered
that doesn't mean it is a smarthost for that ISP.
