Just recently we've been errors on certain pages that we are trying
to as well as issues with programs that require internet access. Here
are some of the issues we are seeing:

www.rhapsody.com (error message below)
www.staples.com (same error when clicking on the cart view portion)
- iTunes store gives an "unknown error" 502
- Rhapsody won't allow anyone to login (getting the following error
"Unable to sign in to Rhapsody. Check your Internet connection, then
try again" -- but, the internet works fine (even the rest of rhapsody
loads that is obviously using the internet)

I believe they are all related and I think they all have something to
do with ISA SP3, but i can't find anything on line...I have SBS 2003
Premium with ISA 2004...

Anyone having this issue? Here is the whole error i'm seeing when
going to a page like www.rhapsody.com:

Technical Information (for support personnel)
Error Code: 502 Proxy Error. The request is not supported. (50)
IP Address: xx.xx.xxx.xx
Date: 5/13/2007 3:34:54 AM
Server: svr.lan.local

thanks for your help,

Hello Jared,

Thanks for posting here.

From the description, I understand that you cannot browse certain internet
web sites thru ISA 2004 and get error "502 proxy error". If I am off base,
please do let me know.

Based on my experience, the problem may occur if there is some specific
access rules deny the traffic to some certain web sites. I suggest that we
try the following steps to see if the problem can be resolved:

1. You have to rerun the CEICW to make sure your SBS 2003 server have right
network configuration. Go through the follow KB and Rerun CEICW again
carefully.

How to configure Internet access in Windows Small Business Server 2003
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/825763/en-us

Then open ISA 2004 console, locate on "SBS internet access rules", move
this rule to the top and click Apply to save all the settings.

2. Then please open the ISA2004 Management Console, in the left panel,
expand to Configuration->Networks. Under "Networks panel", double click
"Internal". Switch to "Web Proxy" panel, click "Authentication" button and
then uncheck the "Require all users to authenticate" option. Then click the
Apply button to save the changes.

3. Please also try deleting the ISA cache to ensure there is no corrupted
content.

a. On the ISA Server computer, stop the Microsoft Firewall service. To do
so:

1). Click Start, click Run, type services.msc in the Open box, and then
click OK.
2). Right-click Microsoft Firewall, and then click Stop.

b. Start Windows Explorer.
c. Locate the Urlcache folder.
d. In the Urlcache folder, locate the file that has the .cdat file name
extension.
e. Right-click the .cdat file, and then click Delete.
f. When you are prompted to confirm the removal of the .cdat file, click
Yes.
If you are prompted to delete the .cdat file because it is too big for the
recycle bin, click Yes.
g. Restart the Microsoft Firewall service.

More information:
How to delete the Web cache in Internet Security and Acceleration Server
2004
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;838248

4. Please ensure the clients are all configured as Web Proxy client:

To be a Web Proxy client, please open IE, click Tools->Internet Options,
and click Connections->LAN Settings, configure ISA server as your Proxy
server (you can enter either the computer name or the internal IP of the
ISA server, port 8080 by default.)

5. Please install ISA firewall client on the client:

On the client, access \\SBSname\mspclnt, run setup.ext to install ISA
firewall on client.

6. Another scenario is that: the issue related to the incompatibility
between web site and ISA's web proxy filter. I suggest we perform following
steps to test:

a. Open ISA 2004 management console, extend Firewall Policy

b. Click Toolbox tap in right pane. Click Protocols->Common Protocols

c. Double click HTTP, click Parameters tap, clear the tick of Web Proxy
Filter.

d. Click OK and then Click Apply to save configuration.

Then, test this issue.

If the problem still persists after performing the above steps, please help
me gather the ISA info and ISA cache:

1. Run command "ipconfig /all > c:\ipconfig_sbs.txt" on SBS, send the files
c:\ipconfig_sbs.txt to me at v-***@microsoft.com.

2. Do you get same error when you access the web sites from SBS?

3. Please help to gather the ISA Info:

1) Download the file from the following URL:

http://www.isatools.org/isainfo/ISAInfo.zip

2) Extract all files to a folder on ISA server.
3) Double click Isainfo.js. This will generate 2 files
ISAInfo2004-<computer-name>.log and ISAInfo2004-<computer-name>.xml in the
current folder.
4) Please send these files to me at v-***@microsoft.com

4. Please also help to gather the ISA logs:

1) Schedule a down time.

2) Open ISA 2004 management console.

3) Expand the server node and highlight 'Monitoring'.

4) In the right pane, switch to the 'Logging' tab, make sure the 'Task
Pane' is showed there.

5) In the 'Task Pane', click 'Configure Firewall Logging' under 'Logging
Tasks', and then switch the 'log storage format' from 'MSDE database'
(default) to 'File'.

6) Switch to the 'Fields' tab, click 'Select All', and then click OK.

7) In the 'Task Pane', click 'Configure Web Proxy Logging' under 'Logging
Tasks', and then switch the 'log storage format' from 'MSDE database'
(default) to 'File'.

8) Switch to the 'Fields' tab, click 'Select All', and then click OK.

9) Click 'Apply' to save changes and update the configuration.

10) Temporarily disable the Firewall service. To do that, please click
Monitoring | Services tab, and then right click 'Microsoft Firewall' to
choose 'Stop'.

11) Clear the current existing W3C logs. To do that, go to the log saving
directory and clean any existing .W3C logs. By default, the logs will be
saved to 'C:\Program Files\Microsoft ISA Server\ISALogs'. (Some MDF may not
be able to deleted, that's normal.) You may backup them first and then
delete them.

12) Go back to the ISA 2004 management console, and then Start the stopped
'Microsoft Firewall' service.

13) Reproduce the problem, stop the service, and then gather the resulting
W3C files to me for analysis.

14) Please also let me know the IP address of the testing clients so that I
can filter the data.

Thanks for your time and cooperation. Please feel free to let me know if
you have any questions or concerns.

Have a nice day!

Best regards,

Terence Liu(MSFT)

wow, thank you for your extensive reply...i noticed that part of the
instructions require "schedule down time" -- does this apply to the
section where there might be "incompatibility between web site and
ISA's web proxy filter" and you give me steps on that? I would like
to try that while people are still online, but don't want to mess
things up with the changes...it is hard for me to be here when nobody

Hello Jared,

Thank you for kind update.

The step 1 to 6 is my suggestions in my previous reply. I'd like you to try
them one by one in order. If the 6 suggestions can resolve your issue, we
do not need to perform any gather info steps, and do not need to schedule a
down time. If the all 6 suggestions can not resolve your issue, please
perform the next step 1 to 4 to gather info for me to narrow down this
issue.

Hope these steps will give you some help.

Thanks and have a nice day!

Best regards,

Terence Liu(MSFT)

Thanks Terence -- I fixed it enabling the Compression Filter, but your
directions below are great since they involve "clean up" types of
things (clearing cache, etc.) and i love doing things like that when i
have time to make sure that things are running smooth...

Thanks for taking the time to give me this list of instructions...

Hello Jered,

Thank you for kind update. And thanks for Lzaan's input.

I'm glad to hear that things are working correctly for you now.

I'd like to make a summary for this post:

Issue:
=============
Cannot browse certain internet web sites thru ISA 2004 and get error "502
proxy error".

Then web sites include:
www.rhapsody.com
www.staples.com

Resolutions:
=============
ISA 2004 console > Configuration > Add-Ins > Web Filters tab > properties
of compression Filter > select Enable this filer. > Ok > Apply.

Please do not hesitate to post in this great newsgroup if you need any
assistance in the future. I look forward to working with you again.

Thank you and have a nice day,

Best regards,
