Discussion:
Antivirus on SBS 2003 - Clients using free McAfee
(too old to reply)

The previous discussion of Antivirus recommendations is noted. Given that
the isp offers free licenses for the clients of McAfee, and there only four
clients, what server antivirus application would be best?

Is there any harm done to try to run a desktop version of McAfee on the
server?

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Richard.

I wouldn't do it. Get an enterprise class of software to run on the server.
Even for smaller shops I use Symantec Corp ed.

It's cheap and works flawlessly for us (so far).

Thanks Nick,

I will check out the alternatives. I had used Symantec for years and liked
it very much.

I agree, central management, about $50 per license (as long as you order
10 - which is the min), Corp Edition AV for Workstations/Servers 10.0.

You need Exchange-aware AV for the server. I use eTrust because it's
reasonably priced and I'm happy with it, and because I've been using it for
years. I recommend Trend because you can get great peer support for Trend
compared to the others. Not sure about McAfee, but most of the free
versions are only licensed for home use on standalone PCs. If you have a
problem, I doubt there's support available. Personally, I'd avoid a free AV
product on my business LAN for licensing and support reasons.

Dear R Skilton.

The problem with McAfee is a Lot of us "OLD" timers in IT have been bitten
big time with McAfee.
Dealing with the antivirus with Palm Hand holds.
Their Firewall that interrupts things with no notification. etc etc.
This along with updates that crash every system in your network.
Are things that make a lot of us IT guys Shy away from McAfee.
(Don't get me wrong in the 80's-90's McAfee Was KING)
(When it got sold to AOL IMO is when it started downhill. Now it's owned by
Network Associates.)

For Personal use I have no problem with a home user using it, especially
when it's free from Comcast.
(Just to let you know that even though it's Free From Comcast, I still Don't
use it.)

This is the other funny thing Symantec for home users, I don't like
but the Server Edition I do like..

I like Trend And CA Stuff also

It's easier for administration to find Server based stuff
So if your time is Valuable, then a server based solution even though it may
seem like a lot of money.
Will Pay for itself in the time it saves you from dealing with Client
updates.

Everyone has likes and dislikes
I like Trend because there' isn't this two part of buying things like the
Symantec has.
(I can't remember what part you had to buy at a different place, it just
bugged me.)

Trend has a Free 30 Day trial and I think others do also..

"Two part of buying things like Symantec has."

What's that about? You buy the corp edition with the correct cals and
deploy, nothing else to buy.
