Discussion:
Fax incoming failes with 0x0000000c using Brooktrout fax board!

I've searched here and on the internet, and all other posts I see for
this problem, recommend a HCL compatible fax device for Windows 2K3. I
have a brooktrout TruFax PCI board now, and although almost all faxes
are now recieved, we still have failures. There is one fax sender in
particular that is failing: with error 0x0000000c. It says it recieves
say 10 pages, with 0 bytes data, and fails with that error. Then a
second call comes in from same, and will recieve last pages of fax just
fine (say last 9 pages of 19 page fax).

What can be done? We can't contact sender, because we can't even
identify! (no TSID, and last few pages of fax content are ambiguous)!

We went out and bought this $500 fax card specifically to get a fax
server that will recieve from anyone! This problem does not occur on
ancient FaxSR Windows NT server that is 10+ years old. We want to get
rid of it, but Windows 2003 fax doesn't work!

Hi Slebbon,

Thank you for posting in SBS newsgroup.

From your description, I understand the issue to be: you are running the
Fax service on your SBS and inbound failures occurs on some incoming faxes
and you got "Reception error" "Unknown fatal error" "0x0000000c". If I have
misunderstood your concerns, please do not hesitate to let me know.

As I know, the error codes 0x0000000c indicate that this issue most
possibly caused by the sending fax device is a multifunction device that
can do printing, copying, scanning, and faxing. So we suggest you confirm
with senders to see whether they are using the multifunction device. And if
the scenario is true, we need to change another fax modem.

Also you can try the following suggestions:

1. Reduce the baud rate of the incoming fax modem and see how it goes.

1) Open My Computer -> Control Panel -> Phone and Modem Options.
2) On the Modems tab, select your modem from the list and click Properties.
3) On the Advanced tab, click Change Default Preferences.
4) The Port speed is 115200 by default; change it to 9600 and see how it
goes.

2. Try turning off compression. To do this, repeat steps 1) - 3) above, and
then change Compression to Disabled.
3. Install the last driver for the modem and check if the issue persists.
4. I also found a similar issue, it is resolved by uninstalling and
reinstalling the Brooktrout fax device. Considering the current condition,
please kindly try to uninstall and reinstall the Brooktrout fax device on
the SBS Server, then try again.

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to let me know.

I appreciate your time and look forward to hearing from you.

Best regards,

Crina Li (MSFT)

The brooktrout devices are not 'modems' they're fax devices. This
means there's no options for 'compression', 'speed' or similar in the
modems control panel.

Of course there's probably some people on the planet who fax from a
multi-function device to us. We recieve hundreds of faxes a day. In
other posts on this problem, I've seen the same recommendations,
followed last by 'use a MSFT certified device'. Well the brooktrout
fax devices are MSFT certified for server 2003. Infact the MSFT fax
server software used in server 2003 was written by brooktrout, and MSFT
licensed it from them!

There is no special brooktrout driver to update, as the only driver
available is the one that ships with the OS.

I will try the (only possible) suggestion #4 you made, and remove and
re-add the brooktrout device from the hardware manager. I'll report
back with how it goes.

Is there not a better explanation anywhere of what error "0x0000000c"
MEANS?

Hi Slebbon,

Thanks for your update.

I have done more research on the issue and found the problem is with the
FSP driver for Fax Services provided and build by Brooktrout that is
included with Windows (RTM). There have been no updates coming from
Brooktrout since. Brooktrout is more than aware, and if you call their
support and are 'lucky' you might actually get access to the new drivers
that they have internally.

You can also try to change inbound ring, but even with that, some
brooktrout users will have to restart their fax services to reload the FSP
every so often.

Based on above information, please set the number of rings to 1 to see if
it helps, and also contact Brooktrout for a newer driver. Thanks for the
understanding.

Additionally, I am also glad to provide the following information for your
reference:

1. Please check the following link to download Trufax analog Diagnostic
Program, and then test the Brooktrout Fax Board:

I'm with you on that. My $500 Brooktrout TruFax 200 is sitting in its box
on the floor in the server room. Read between the lines. "MSFT certified
for server 2003" um, SBS it not in there. Brooktrout claims it's a MS fax
software problem and are more than happy to sell you one of their
"supported" fax solutions for their "low end" fax board.

Yes I have posted on this subject before and I will continue to until
Brooktrout solves this issue or issues a more defined MSFT certified device
list and excludes SBS because it doesn't work on SBS.

Approach it from the other angle, why hardware products does MS say they
are compliant with?

I went with a solution from GFI for all of our clients and have been
very happy. I'm at one right now that has 10 dedicated fax lines using
Multitech External Voice/CID Modems and 2 RocketPort PCI Serial Cards -
we see an error rate of .5% per month in received faxes (about 1500 per
day inbound).
