Do does the following file exist?

c:\Inetpub\wwwroot\web.config

If so, move (not copy) it to the desktop and then do an iisreset from a
command prompt. Then try the backup again.

Hi Merv,

Thanks for the reply, I cannot see that file in that location.

Do does the following file exist?
c:\Inetpub\wwwroot\web.config
If so, move (not copy) it to the desktop and then do an iisreset from
a command prompt. Then try the backup again.

Somehow, your machine.cfg file has apparently been updated but isn't
working. I have only found a similar post with the '/' Application error
(not '/' Backup). From that post, the proposed resolution is to edit the
machine.cfg and "comment out" the lines associated with the update that is
causing the error.

Help with Resolution for MS 827929 (Server Error in '/' Application)
(should only need to do the first part of the resolution - i.e., Method 1)
http://www.eggheadcafe.com/forumarchives/windowsserversbs/Sep2005/post24253235.asp

Since you would first make a backup of the machine.cfg file before editing
it, I believe this approach is worth a shot.

Frank's submission definitely resolves the issue that the knowledgebase addresses, which is what I was looking for, namely,

Access to the path "C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v1.1.4322\Temporary ASP.NET Files\backup\55b79170\2502a0a" is denied.

This occurred to me when I halted the initial installation of the SBS 2003 setup components. The actual folder referenced \backup (and subfolders) was missing, so things obviously weren't right. Once I had followed the procedure suggested in the kb article, all worked fine. It certainly won't do you any harm trying it! Basically, anything that was using iis and dotnet was broken, so this fixed a lot of things.
