Hi

the WinHTTP Web Proxy Auto-Discovery Service keeps stopping; which is
generating errors in the system log with event ID 12503 & 12517.
How can I resolve this please?

Those messages are not error messages, but rather informational messages. As
such, they can be ignored as there's nothing that you can do about them,
AFAIK.

Hi Waj:
Thank you for posting here. Also many thanks for Kevin's inputs.

By default, the ISA Auto-discovery feature is not enabled. To configure it,
enable it or disable it, please refer to the following article:

816320 HOW TO: Configure Firewall and Web Proxy Client Autodiscovery in
Windows
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=816320

Can I assume that you are referring to the following events?

Event Type: Information
Event Source: WinHttpAutoProxySvc
Event Category: None
Event ID: 12503
Description:
The WinHTTP Web Proxy Auto-Discovery Service has been idle for 15 minutes,
it will be shut down.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

Event Type: Information
Event Source: WinHttpAutoProxySvc
Event Category: None
Event ID: 12517
Description:
The WinHTTP Web Proxy Auto-Discovery Service suspended operation.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

If this is the case, you can disable the WinHTTP Web Proxy Auto-Discovery
Service from the Services console to avoid this issue.

1. Open Server Management console.

2. Select "Advanced Management"->"Computer Management"->"Services and
Applications"->"Services".

3. Locate "WinHTTP Web Proxy Auto-Discovery Service" service and open its
properties.

4. Set it to "Disable" so this service will not run on next restart.
- You can click "Stop" to stop this service if it is running.

5. Click "OK" to take effect.

By default, this service is not started in a standard SBS 2003
installation. If this service is started and it is not used by any client
for 15 minutes, it will detect this idle and automatically stop. This
process will initiate the above events in Event Viewer. If you are
encountering these events, please feel free to stop this service and it
will not affect your basic functionalities.

Hope the above information helps. Please feel free to let me know if there
is anything I can do for you.

Have a nice day!

Best Regards
Edward Tian(MSFT)
