Discussion:
Event 7001 - only occasionally!

I'm getting Application event 7001, but only occasionally. Every few weeks
(7 times in the last 3 months) event 7001 shows up _ONE_ time: "VssAdmin:
Unable to create a shadow copy: Either the specified volume was not found or
it is not a local volume."

I have shadow copies enabled for two volumes, and C:\Windows\Tasks has two
ShadowCopyVolume jobs. They're staggered by 10 minutes so I can tell which
is which. The volume numbers on the 7001 errors match the volumes that are
actually being shadow copied, and at the right scheduled times. I've gotten
the errors on both volumes, on different dates. The errors are evenly
divided between the 7am and noon schedules.

Every time that I check, the scheduled shadow copy was actually created.
Are these events just an occasional fluke, something I can safely ignore?

Hi,

Thank you for your post.

From the description, I understand that you occasionally encountered a
problem with the event 7001, part of the information would be "Unable to
create a shadow copy, Either the specified volume was not found or it is
not a local volume¡¡The GUID noted is specific to the GUID of a volume
that Shadow Copy is configured on" in the application log. If I am off
base, please let me know.

Based on my research, the common cause for this event is that a
volume/partition that had Shadow Copy configured on it was deleted or was
remounted with a new GUID.

This error will be posted in the application event log for each volume that
has the problem. Volume Shadow Copies of volumes that still exist and have
it configured will still be successful.

To keep the events from being posted, you can go into start' Control
Panel'Scheduled Tasks and there should be an entry that has the same GUID
as you see in the event log description. Delete that entry and VSS will no
longer try to do a shadow copy of a volume with that GUID.

To keep this from occurring, it is recommended that the schedule Shadow
Copy be disabled through the UI before the volume is deleted or remounted
with new GUID.

Please follow the steps below to disable the shadow copy:
1. Right click the volume for shadow copy, and then select the
properties.
2. In the "shadow copy" tab, you can disable the shadow copy
temporally.

After you have deleted or remounted the volume, please follow the steps
above to re-enable the shadow copy on the new volume.

Here is some more information for you:

I've seen the same information on resolving this problem, and I can't see how
it could apply. As I noted in my original post, I have _two_ volumes being
shadow copied, I have _two_ ShadowCopyVolume jobs in Scheduled Tasks, the
GUIDs of the scheduled jobs match the GUIDs of the volumes being shadow
copied--and so do the GUIDs in the error messages. These jobs run twice
every weekday, but the error only occurs two or three times a month.

It happened again yesterday morning (reminding me to check here). The GUID
in the error points to my C: system volume; however, the C: shadow copy for
yesterday morning was successfully created. The creation time for the file
in System Volume Information is the same, to the second, as the time of the
error message saying the shadow copy couldn't be created.

So it looks as though VSS is occasionally giving me spurious errors when it
is actually performing properly.

Ouch! Actually, I installed hotfix 833167 4 days before I originally posted
this question; the 7001 error has occurred twice since. But, as I say, all
of the shadow copies seem to be getting created properly.

Hi,

Thank you for your updates.

According to your description, you have not encountered any problem yet. I
suggest you reschedule the VSS for the two volumes; you can set 30 minute
or more intervals between each VSS. It might be caused by VSS timeout. Are
there any other error messages at the same time in the event view?

So please closely monitor the VSS to see if the problem is reproduced. If
so please do not hesitate to let me know.

I appreciate your understanding.
