Discussion:
Connection with server failed. Hit <F5> to retry. (Symantec Backup Exec SB 11d)

All,

I'm experiencing some issues with my installation of Symantec Backup
Exec 11d, the Small Business edition.

This has been newly installed on a new Dell server running Windows
Server SBS 2003 R2 but whrn I come to create a backup job, whether it
be manually or via the Wizard, I cannot view the selection list.
Instead, I get a message that reads, "Connection with server failed.
Hit <F5> to retry."

Symantec's support website claims that this is down to the credentials
that the Backup Exec services are using to connect to the server,
however I have checked and double-checked these and they are OK. I am
using the built-in domain Administrator account as credentials for
these services.

All services started OK but no luck in getting my selection list up.
I've never come across this before and have lost count of how many
times I have installed Backup Exec 11d on an SBS server, I'm stumped :-
(

I installed Microsoft SQL Server 2005 from the Premium Technologies
disc AFTER installing Symantec but BEFORE creating any backup job.

Any thoughts on where to go next?

Thanks

OK folks

There is an answer to this one, which I will post up in full. It turns
out it is quite straightforward in the end.

I contacted Symantec on hte number above (thanks Russell) but they
directed me to contact Dell as the product is installed on a new Dell
PowerEdge server. Dell technician said it was a permissions-related
problem and yet I had checked all of the username, password and domain
credentials over and over.

Finally my colleague here spotted the problem. At some point or
another we had managed to place hte built-in administrator account in
REMOTE OPERATORS SECURITY GROUP. Membership of this group means that
many other administrative permissions are cancelled out, and therefore
no rights to log on to the server using the administrator credentials
in Veritas.

Remove administrator from Remote Operators and you can now connect to
the server and configure/run backup jobs.

For the record the error when logging onto console was this: "The
local policy of this system does not permit you to logon
interactively".

When you reply to a post in http://forums.techarena.in
it shows up as a broken thread on a Microsoft Public newsgroup

Specifically this group.
NewsServer: msnews.microsoft.com
newsgroup: microsoft.public.windows.server.sbs

This site.
http://forums.techarena.in/small-business-server/
Copies Posts from Microsoft Break/Fix SBS newsgroup.

So Any responding or posting means that 99% of the world will not know what
you are responding to.
(Since it will be a broken thread on the original source.)

In your current post we have no reference to what you are talking about.

If you avoid Techarena.in and post directly to the Microsoft
newsgroup you will benefit from threads not getting broken.
And a lot of misunderstanding.

You can either use a NNTP News Reader (Example Outlook Express)
And set it up with:
NewsServer: msnews.microsoft.com
newsgroup: microsoft.public.windows.server.sbs
or By Clicking Below

If you wish a "WEB" Based interface with NO Ad's you can go directly to this

s&cat=en_US_e18fea59-512f-421e-b9f3-3e1f643123f2&lang=en&cr=US
It has the feature to notify you on a reply also.

To Search for issues in the past the best way is to Google them.

This has way more information than that website will ever have and help you
to stay connected.

Thanks
I hope you find this information helpful.
